Expert networks

Expert networks are important for the opportunity they provide to fulfil several of the long-term goals that exist for Clinical Studies Sweden, such as creating a sustainable and well-functioning national system for clinical studies of high quality.

Several reports indicate that a network of clinical specialists is an important component for achieving good results in clinical studies. Initiatives implemented in Denmark and the United Kingdom to facilitate clinical studies highlight clinical expert networks as a success factor.

Networks of clinical specialists can contribute to more effective studies by:

  • building strong research teams and train new researchers
  • coordinate studies
  • identify gaps in knowledge

A minor pilot study has mapped out the development needs for a number of existing clinical networks. In July 2017, the Swedish Research Council received a new assignment that includes supporting the development and allocation of funds to national networks. A review on if and how to coordinate these missions is underway.

The need for expert networks for study inquiries will be handled in the development initiative Coordination of feasibilities.
